
Keeping the Sparks Out of the Shower: Infrared Heating in Wet Zones
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’ve got steam, splashes, and constant humidity. Since water and electricity are a disaster waiting to happen, a single leaky seal can lead to a short circuit or a ground fault. To make sure these things are actually safe, we focus on two things: the IP65 rating and keeping the heating element totally isolated.
The battle against moisture
An IP65 rating sounds like technical jargon, but it basically means the housing is tight enough to keep out dust and handle water jets without breaking a sweat. We use silicone gaskets and reinforced polymer seals everywhere. But here’s the thing: the most common place for these to fail is right where the power cable enters the chassis. To stop moisture from literally “crawling” inside through capillary action, we use compression glands. It keeps the internals bone-dry.
Stopping the jump
We can’t just let the quartz tube touch the outer casing. That’s a recipe for trouble. Instead, we use high-temperature ceramic stand-offs. These act as a wall, making sure the current stays in the filament where it belongs instead of jumping over to the grounded chassis. We also use double-insulated cabling that can handle up to 105°C. If the wires melted under the heat, you’d have live cables exposed, and nobody wants that.
Staying safe
Every single unit gets a dedicated earth ground. If something does go wrong inside, the breaker trips instantly. It’s much better for the power to cut out than for the heater’s shell to become electrified. Just a heads-up, though. IP65 is great for splashes, but it’s not a submarine. If you’re putting these in a steam room where it’s 100% saturated for hours on end, you’ve got to keep an eye on them. Check those seals every six months. The constant heating up and cooling down can make gaskets loosen over time. Keep the wiring tight and the seals compressed. That’s the secret to keeping the circuit dry and the people using it safe.
