
Why we’re ditching old lamp warmers for waterproof infrared heaters
Ever notice how those old-school halogen lamp warmers always seem to die right when you need them? It’s not a coincidence. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam and the occasional splash, moisture just finds a way inside the housing. One day it’s working, the next it’s short-circuited or the filament has just given up. That’s why we’ve stopped recommending them and started moving toward waterproof infrared heaters. The secret is in the seal Here’s the thing: standard heaters aren’t built for a shower zone. But a high IP-rated infrared unit is a different story. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed glass tubes to keep the water far away from the live wires. It’s basically armor for your heater. But the real magic is how they actually feel. Old lamps try to heat up the air in the room, which takes forever. Infrared is different. It sends out short-wave radiation that hits your skin and the walls directly. You don’t have to stand around waiting for the room to warm up—you feel the heat the second you flip the switch. It’s instant. What’s under the hood We build these things with quartz glass and beefed-up reflectors to make sure the heat actually reaches you. The wiring is wrapped in silicone, too, so it doesn’t get brittle or crack after heating up and cooling down a thousand times. Just a heads-up if you’re the one doing the wiring: check your breaker. These units pull a lot of power. If you use wire that’s too thin, you’ll deal with voltage drops, and your heater will feel patchy or weak. A few things to keep in mind Now, these are safer and punch way above their weight in terms of heat, but they aren’t “set it and forget it.” Because the housings are sealed tight to keep water out, they can’t “breathe” as well as open heaters. If you cram them into a tight corner with no airflow, the internal thermal cutoff will trip to keep the unit from melting down. Give the chassis some breathing room. And for heaven’s sake, use the right mounting brackets. If the unit vibrates, those seals can wear out over time, and that’s the last thing you want in a wet room.
