
Stop Fighting Your Foggy Bathroom Mirror
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower, ready to get ready for the day, and you’re staring at a wall of white fog. You wipe a streak through the glass with your hand, but it just smears. It’s annoying. The fix is actually pretty simple: we use infrared heating lamps. They basically push heat directly into the glass, keeping it just warm enough that the steam can’t settle. No fog, no smudges, just a clear mirror the second you step out of the shower.
Getting the Power Right
Here’s the thing: you can’t just throw any lamp at any mirror and hope for the best. If you have a small vanity mirror, you only need a little bit of juice—somewhere between 50W and 150W. If you go overboard here, you risk overheating the glass or ruining the silver backing. But if you’re dealing with a massive, full-length mirror? You’re going to need more power. It’s all about finding that sweet spot. If the wattage is too low, you’ll end up with a clear border but a foggy blob right in the center. Too high, and the glass gets uncomfortably hot to the touch. You want it warm, not scorching.
Where to Put the Heat
Placement is everything. Instead of using one giant, high-wattage lamp, I always recommend using a few smaller ones spread across the back. Why? Because one massive heat source creates “hot spots.” And when one part of the glass gets way hotter than the rest, that’s when things can crack. As for the wiring, most of these units just drop right into your existing light or vent circuit. Just a heads-up: higher wattage means more current. Double-check that your wiring can handle the load. You don’t want your cables heating up inside your walls.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
More power means the mirror clears faster. That sounds great, right? But there’s a catch. If your bathroom doesn’t have great airflow, those high-power lamps can basically bake themselves in their own housing. This leads to them burning out way sooner than they should. The trick is to leave a small air gap between the lamp and the back of the mirror. Let it breathe, and your gear will last a whole lot longer.
